HappySounds Community Choir
The sessions are run by professional singer and voice coach Nettie Osman, who has performed in bands and as a solo singer for more than 30 years. No audition is necessary. Nettie started the HappySounds Community Choirs in October 2018, after being approached by the Cornard Breathe Easy group, to help them with some exercises. Very soon, around 25 people were attending weekly on Monday mornings, and when asked the question “do you want to be a proper choir as well as being a therapy group” the answer was a resounding “yes please”.
Dependent on Government restrictions regarding Covid-19, the choir either meets in person (socially distanced and masked) or on Zoom, with lots of fun additional projects for members to get involved in, such as recordings, voice workshops and creative songwriting sessions, and a monthly social gathering via Zoom when we are in lockdown.
For those either unable or not yet ready to return to Choir in person, the sessions are Livestreamed via Zoom into members’ homes so they can keep up with the latest, and not miss out on anything!
The Choir is a fun and friendly place to be, everyone has made lots of new friends, and they also get the benefit of some pro voice tips, as well as free online learning resources and a place to chat in a private Facebook members’ page.
We sing to rock and pop backing tracks, and make sure we have time for a breather in between songs. The group sings a mixture of popular songs from the last few decades, as well as a little musical theatre. Preparations will soon be under way for our Summer concerts. We have great fun learning harmonies and trying lots of new songs and sing anything from the Beatles to Ed Sheeran!
It's also a great way to make new friends - there's time built in to our sessions for a natter. Practise sessions consist of warm ups, a little vocal technique, and then working together on our harmonies. Occasionally we go "off piste" and pick random songs to all sing along to - and often find great ideas for new songs to do! If you are part of our Livestream group you also have the facility to chat to the other members online via the messaging box.
If you're interested in joining and would like more info please contact Nettie using the contact form on this website. HappySounds Community Choir meets every Thursday evening, at Assington Village hall. Pre-booking and pre-payment is essential. Due to Covid-19, places are very limited and we therefore cannot accept walk-ins.
After a few weeks of meeting online, the choir were finally able to get together in December to perform two concerts - one livestreamed to Care Homes around the UK, and the other outdoors on the Village Green at Assington, in rather chilly circumstances! The harmonies were amazing considering there were only a small handful of in person rehearsals and the Choir did a fantastic job, raising £150 for local animal sanctuary SESAW.
